Four Fleming Teachers Receive National Board Certification

Process Reinforces High Standards, Commitment to Excellence in Teaching

 

Flemingsburg, KY. — January 2, 2018 — Four Fleming County teachers join 3,292 other teachers in Kentucky who have already achieved National Board Certification.  Jenny Bays, Sheila Lamb, Bobby Pease, and Melissa Plank recently received news that they have been certified through this process which validates the excellent teaching that takes place in their classrooms each day. 

Mrs. Jenny Bays is the fifth grade teacher at E P Ward Elementary School.  Mrs. Sheila Lamb teaches music and is choir director at Simons Middle School and Fleming County High School Mr. Bobby Pease is an agriculture/welding teacher in the Career and Technical Education department at Fleming County High School.  Mrs. Melissa Plank teaches eighth grade mathematics at Simons Middle School.  All are veteran teachers in Fleming County Schools.

“Fleming County Schools commends these teachers and their dedication to professional growth.  We remain committed to helping others achieve National Board Certification as a way to improve the teaching and learning process in Fleming County, which benefits students”, commented Dr. Brian Creasman, Fleming County Schools Superintendent.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, now in its 30th year, is excited to celebrate these teachers along with the nearly 20,000 teachers currently pursuing Board certification – seen as the profession’s mark of accomplished practice.

“Working toward certification is a process that encourages self-reflection leading to continuous improvement in teaching practice.  This is the best professional development experience of my career,” said Bobbie Jo Vice, Flemingsburg Elementary teacher, who serves as the district’s NBCT cohort mentor, assisting Fleming County teachers who are pursuing certification.

Working to establish a professional career continuum for teachers, the National Board is at work across the country, setting the expectation that all teachers should demonstrate accomplished teaching via National Board certification and become leaders in their schools and communities. Every child should have the opportunity to learn from an accomplished teacher.

Recognized as the gold standard in teacher certification, the National Board believes higher standards for teachers means better learning for students. Research shows that the students of Board-certified teachers learn more than students in other classrooms, which is why many states and districts, including Kentucky, offer incentives for teachers to pursue Board certification.  In July, 2000, the Kentucky General Assembly established in KRS 161.131 a goal that by the year 2020, every public school in Kentucky would have at least one National Board certified teacher. The goal was based upon the General Assembly’s findings that:

  • Student achievement is directly related to a teacher’s ability to nurture learning
  • All students are entitled to have teachers who know the subjects they teach and who demonstrate skill to manage and monitor student learning
  • Teachers need support and opportunity to develop higher-level skills throughout their careers
  • National Board certification is based upon high and rigorous standards and provides a process of development and assessment of teachers’ knowledge, skill and ability
  • Teachers who successfully meet National Board certification requirements strengthen the teaching profession by mentoring new teachers, serving as role models and master teachers for teacher candidates, and assisting other teachers who seek National Board certification.

    Fleming County Schools congratulates these four exceptional teachers on this accomplishment and thanks them for their service and dedication to the students of Fleming County.
