VBS Appreciation

VBS

July 30, 2018

Dear Fleming Countians,

As we come to the end of the summer, I want to thank all of the local churches that offered Vacation Bible School to our students. Over the past two years, student attendance, based on reports from the community has increased, which will result in stronger academic achievement throughout the school year for our students.

As a district, we are committed to offering as many summer learning programs as possible to our students. We believe that summer learning, especially during the elementary years, is essential to helping students to become college, career, and life ready. Though Fleming County Schools has little involvement in the many Vacation Bible Schools in our community, the experiences (social, emotional, and academic) students are afforded during the summer months, are invaluable. As a community, we need to offer students as many learning opportunities throughout the summer as possible. Students will always remember the friendships, experiences and life lessons from Vacation Bible School, as I have from the many Vacation Bible Schools that I attended growing up in the rural mountains of western North Carolina.

From a parent’s perspective and not as an educator, my 4-year old daughter, Georgia, had a blast attending several Vacation Bible Schools this summer. The life lessons she learned, the many crafts she created and the many friendships she developed were all positive and will have a lasting impact on her developmentally. As a parent, I want to thank all of the church staffs and members who provided Georgia these summer learning experiences. Don’t think Vacation Bible School has little results; as a parent and educator, I can attest that the results are positive and critical.
Though the work that goes into holding a Vacation Bible School takes months of planning and long hours during the summer months, I would encourage churches to continue offering this invaluable experience to the community’s youth. Trust me, the reward will be ten-fold in the years to come. In many respects, Vacation Bible School is part of the fabric that makes our community, commonwealth, and country such a great place to live.

Please let us know how as a district we can support your church’s Vacation Bible School next summer. Again, thank you to those churches who provided this excellent experience to our students. Also, I want to thank all of the local churches that sponsor our schools throughout the school year. Members of many of the local churches provide needed supports and resources that students need. We appreciate those who come into our schools and provide tutoring and helping hands.

Our Journey Continues…
