School Nutrition Director

As students return to school this fall, they will find even more healthy new choices in their cafeterias.  The School Nutrition staff will be serving school meals that meet tough Federal Nutrition standards set forth by the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.  Now is a great time to encourage your kids to choose school breakfast and lunch!  The Fleming County Schools Nutrition Services is dedicated to providing nutritious, healthy meals to the children of Fleming County.  We strive to plan our menus so that they are student driven, having taste testing throughout the school year at all schools, so students tell us what they want to eat.  In doing so, we must follow State guidelines for both breakfast and lunch.  We will again in 2018-2019 school year, be required to meet the following standards:  Age appropriate calorie limits, students are required to take a fruit or vegetable on tray, wider variety of vegetables, including dark green, red/orange and beans, more whole grains, less sodium, meat minimum/maximum per week.  Two big changes this year are we will be offering 1% flavored and white milk and have received a Whole Grain waiver for biscuits, pasta and rice from KDE School & Community Nutrition.  These two changes were also student driven.  All of our schools are CEP qualified meaning that all students will receive a free breakfast and lunch again this year.

Fleming County Schools is among the first public school districts in Kentucky and in the nation to evaluate how we are meeting the needs of ALL students. Our vision to become a District of Distinction challenges us to push the boundaries so that we ensure ALL students experience success. Furthermore, and more importantly, all students must feel comfortable in their school and have a voice in their educational journey.

Public Service Announcement 2-16-18

Dear Fleming Countians,

The district has been notified of an indirect threat that has occurred through social media.  Again, this is an indirect threat from a student who is no longer attending a Fleming County School.  This threat is directed toward a school in another state, but out of an abundance of safety, we are following necessary protocols.  Local authorities are already involved and working with other necessary authorities.  One of our students alerted administrators at Simons Middle School and they immediately started investigating and implementing necessary protocols.  We have released on Simons Middle School's Facebook page a statement so that parents, guardians, students, and faculty & staff are aware of the indirect threat.

If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone for 24 hours without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)

September 5, 2017

Fleming Countians,

On Wednesday, August 30, 2017, it was brought to my attention that some trophies at the high school had been discarded and thrown in the garbage. To be clear, this was never the intention, but a result of poor communication coming from the district office. When the decision was made to throw items away that had been stored for more than a year in storage containers, due to mold and moisture concerns, we were unaware that trophies were in the construction storage containers.

School Closing - August 21, 2018 School Closed

Fleming County Schools will be closed on Monday, August 21, 2017, as a result of the upcoming Solar Eclipse. This decision was made with a focus on student safety after reviewing information from our insurance agent, discussions with other leaders in Kentucky, and monitoring decisions made by other school districts across the state. Early dismissal was not an option as buses would have been on the road during or close to the end of the Solar Eclipse which places students and bus drivers in harm’s way unnecessarily.

Using this feedback, the information anchored on the website garnered the most support and interest. To be clear, we listened to our people, parents, and community, as we wanted to create a site that was used extensively by all.

Dear Fleming Countians,

As we approach the end of 2016, it is important that we celebrate the holiday season. This time of the year is the perfect time to reflect, appreciate and celebrate the many things that we have accomplished in our lives. This is also a great time of the year to recognize the many things that we have accomplished together as a community. It seems like yesterday that students returned from summer break, yet, we have reached the midpoint of the academic year.

2017-2018 Calendar Options Survey Calendar

FCS Stakeholders:

Fleming County Schools is in the process of planning its academic school year calendar for 2017-2018. The district has developed four calendar options (click the links below) and is seeking input from students, teachers, staff members, parents and members of the community. This is not a vote but rather an opportunity to receive input from all stakeholders. We want your input and feedback to share with members of the Fleming County Board of Education. The district reviews and values all comments as we utilize to develop a calendar that is the best for the teaching and learning process in Fleming County.

Cold Weather Advisory Winter Chill

Attention Parents & Guardians:

Our area will be experiencing very cold temperatures over the next several days.  We can assure you that our school buildings are warm, safe, and an ideal place for students to be when it is extremely cold outside.  The district urges students to wear winter hats, gloves, heavy coats and boots.  Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately in layers over the next several days, especially if they will be waiting outside for a bus.  We will continue to monitor weather reports and send updates as necessary.  Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact the district office at 845-5851.

Accountability Scores Released

October 3, 2014

Today, the Kentucky Department of Education released test scores for each school district and each public K-12 school in Kentucky. I wanted to take the opportunity to share details about where we are and where we are going. But first, we value the strong support that our parents and community members provide and are pleased to provide you with these school report cards that outline the facts about our schools and district for the 2013-2014 school year. The information will assist you in helping us to strengthen and raise the academic achievement bar and to continue to provide educational opportunities for the future. Click here to read more.

Fleming County Schools Rank 6th in State in Attendance Improvement

KDE recently announced that Fleming County Schools, district-wide, increased in overall attendance percentage by + 1.102%.  Our district percentage attendance was 95.21% for the 2013-2014 school year.

This increase was the 6th highest attendance percentage increase in the state.  That kind of increase is an accomplishment for students, parents and staff.  Fleming County students made great gains in attendance because the district, as a whole, had a heightened emphasis on promoting good attendance; and each school’s leadership took more ownership of their school’s attendance.  This was accomplished, in part, by adhering to and implementing the policy with more consistency, without changing it.  The district had a greater awareness and focus of student attendance.

It took the board’s support, the school staff being on the front line informing and enforcing the policy in place, and the cooperation of the parents and students.

Just imagine what the possibility is of increasing Fleming County’s attendance percentage even more this year with the changes in the attendance policy.

Superintendent Announcement

On Thursday, August 7, 2014, Brian Creasman was named as the new Superintendent for Fleming County Schools.  Creasman will begin his new duties on Tuesday, September 2nd.  A native of North Carolina, Dr. Creasman currently is serving as Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services and Instructional Support for the Vance County School District in North Carolina.   “One of the reasons I applied for this position,” said Creasman, “is the small town atmosphere.  I was raised in a small town and want my daughter to have those same roots.  Fleming County has some of the best teachers and students in the state.  I'm excited to be here and I'm really looking forward to getting to know everyone and getting started.  I want to thank Vance County Schools as it has provided me excellent training and experiences that has prepared me to step into this position.  As I toured the schools and met students, teachers and the staff today, I am truly confident we can be the best in Kentucky.”

Dr. Creasman will be in the district intermittently until he begins his full-time duties on September 2nd.  Bill Morgan will remain as Interim Superintendent until that time.

Dear Fleming Countians,

As we approach the Thanksgiving Holiday, as a school district and community, we all must pause and give thanks for all of our many blessings. No matter what the year has brought our way, the ups, and downs, we all have been blessed in so many ways. We are fortunate to live in the best community, commonwealth, and nation. We have an excellent community, phenomenal students, and parents who care about the well-being of their children, and a faculty and staff who work hard to make the lives of our students better for the future. We are fortunate that our schools sit in the heart of a community that continually displays its support for each school, the staff, and more importantly, our students.

Accountability System Feedback Sought

Dear Education Shareholders,

The contents of our new accountability system, which citizens provided input on in my recent Town Hall Meetings held across the state, also must conform to the regulations that the U.S. Department of Education (USED) generates to provide the implementation details by which states must abide. These regulations, in draft form, have been made public by USED for the purpose of public feedback. We need as many folks as possible to send in feedback to USED on the draft regulations to make known the areas where changes must be addressed.I am hoping that we can get at least 1,000 Kentucky citizens to submit comments and make our state the one with the most submissions.

School Delay Schedule Change

FLEMING COUNTY SCHOOLS ANNOUNCEMENT

State law requires all school districts to have no less than 170 full 6-hour days during a school year.  To be in compliance with this, Fleming County Board of Education approved a plan that if there is more inclement weather prohibiting school from being in session on a normal schedule, there will be 2 options, effective after Tuesday, February 11, 2014:

  1. NO SCHOOLWeather is too treacherous to attempt to have school.   Any days dismissed will be made up according to state laws and regulations.
  2. 1-For-1 Plan(1 Hour Delay/1 Hour Extension)If it is determined, in the interest of student safety, to run buses at a later than normal starting time, a 1 hour delay will be announced.  This will result in school starting one hour later AND dismissing one hour later than regular schedule, but the school day will be a full day.  Also, bus service will operate on the 1-For-1 Plan, observing the delay bus routes.

Note:  If no announcement is made, school will operate on a normal schedule.

The form is available at the superintendent’s office, any Fleming County elementary school, or may be downloaded and printed from the district’s website (click here).  The attendance area zone map is available for viewing at the district office.

District Strategic Plan Survey

Fleming County Schools is embarking on the important process of developing a strategic plan. The strategic plan serves as a road map; it outlines the goals that the school district strives to achieve and the steps to reaching those goals. To accomplish this task, we need your feedback. To be as inclusive as possible, the district will reach out to everyone in the community via the Strategic Plan Survey. This survey will be conducted from January 7, 2015 to January 21, 2015 to gain an understanding of the community's view to the proposed strategic plan. The survey will be open to all parents, guardians and members of the community. The Strategic Plan Survey contains 32 questions designed to evaluate the strategic framework. Your responses will provide the district useful information as we prepare for the next steps.

Please access the survey here.  Thank you for your input.

FES Principal Selection

Dear Flemingsburg Elementary Faculty, Staff, Parents and Community:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the SBDM council at Flemingsburg Elementary School for their work as they selected their new principal. The team provided great leadership throughout the selection process and ensured that all voices were heard and considered. The SBDM council reviewed the principal survey results and all of the comments that were provided as they made their decision.

As superintendent it is with great pleasure to introduce Kristen Manning, the current Assistant Principal at Flemingsburg Elementary School, as the new principal. The SBDM council and I believe Kristen has met our goal of finding an exceptional school leader who will be a valuable, instructional leader and active member of the school community. Kristen brings enthusiasm and an exceptional instructional mindset to the principal’s chair. The faculty/staff and parents were highly complementary about her leadership and focus on students. Her experiences, enthusiasm, and leadership qualities will be a great asset to the students, faculty/staff and to the larger school community. The SBDM council has taken a major step in helping the school become a “School of Distinction.”

Please join me in congratulating Kristen, the new principal of Flemingsburg Elementary School.

Superintendent: Community Support is Incredible

Dear Fleming County Parents, Guardians, Community, Business Partners and Volunteers:

As we approach the end of a successful school year, I want to applaud the community’s support. Since moving to Fleming County back in the fall, I have truly been amazed by how much the community supports and values our schools. Though Fleming County may be small in population, the community support for the school district is unparalleled

Faculty and Staff,

As we return from Spring Break, our work now must intensify as we prepare students for state assessments, final grade/class/course requirements and graduation. As we conveyed to the principals, this is the most important time of the year. These last remaining weeks will make or break us. It is so important to end the school year on a good note.
