Students remember more and learn more deeply when they have a voice in how they learn. Fleming County Schools is continuing to expand student agency by giving students meaningful opportunities to make choices, design products, and set paths that reflect their strengths and interests.
This focus on agency is a central part of the BRIDGE Performance Indicators. Students demonstrate learning through authentic tasks that connect to the Kentucky Academic Standards and to the competencies that prepare them for success in college, career, and life. When students direct elements of their learning, they engage more fully and show stronger mastery of content and skills.
Across the district, BRIDGE Performance Assessments are creating opportunities for students to shape their work. Students are selecting formats for their projects, choosing artifacts to demonstrate their growth, and applying their learning through tasks that resemble real-world problem solving. These choices help students build confidence, persistence, and ownership. They also support several key competencies, including Innovation and Creativity, Problem-Solving, Communication, and Growth and Achievement.
Superintendent Dr. Brian Creasman noted that agency helps students understand themselves as learners and strengthens both memory and mastery.
“When students take an active role in shaping their work, they learn how to think independently and apply knowledge in meaningful ways,” he said. “Agency helps students see the value of their learning and builds the confidence they need for future success.”
Student agency also supports the district’s commitment to a Vibrant Ecosystem, where relevance, purpose, and student voice guide instructional design. Teachers create environments where students practice making decisions, reflect on their learning, and demonstrate skills through personalized pathways.
We look forward to continuing to share how vibrant learning comes to life and how our district prepares students for the next level and for life beyond school.
