Did You Know: Agency Grows When Students See Their Work as a Reflection of Who They Are?

Students are more invested in learning when their work reflects their ideas, identity, and purpose. Across Fleming County Schools, students are creating projects, artifacts, and portfolios that showcase their thinking, personality, culture, and goals.

Through BPI-aligned learning experiences and student portfolios, learners are encouraged to make choices about how their work looks, sounds, and feels. These choices allow students to bring their interests and strengths into the learning process. As a result, learning feels meaningful and connected to who they are as individuals.

This work aligns with the district’s Vibrant Ecosystem, which emphasizes relevance, student ownership, and authentic demonstrations of learning. When students see themselves in their work, they develop stronger agency and a clearer sense of purpose. They are more willing to reflect, revise, and explain their thinking.

Creating personal artifacts also strengthens several BRIDGE Performance Indicators. Students practice Communication as they explain their ideas, Innovation and Creativity as they design original work, Growth and Achievement as they track progress, and Problem-Solving as they make decisions about their learning. These competencies support readiness for college, career, and life.

Superintendent Dr. Brian Creasman shared that identity-connected learning helps students see value in their work.

“When students see their work as a reflection of who they are, they take greater pride in their learning and greater ownership of their growth,” he said. “That sense of purpose strengthens agency and confidence.”

Across Fleming County Schools, this focus on meaningful student work is helping learners feel seen, valued, and connected. We look forward to continuing to share how vibrant learning comes to life and how our district prepares students for the next level and for life beyond school.
